Kelly - Made in Maine, Boston, Montreal, NYC and San Francisco.
I grew up in Madawaska, Maine and knew early on that I would move away. There were no opportunities for young people in such an isolated area. I left for Boston at 18 to attend Massachusetts College of Art & Design with only 7 years worth of oil painting lessons, and a high school Art Award. I chose Boston because I was encouraged by my art teacher to apply and attend her alma mater. Without her help I'm not sure where I would have ended up.
Soon after completing college, I landed my first job at Little, Brown & Company designing book covers and marketing materials. I remember once telling a friend that I couldn't believe they were paying me to do this. It was a competitive job to land, and I was later told I won the spot because of my typography skills. To this day the label of type specialist has followed me. I had the opportunity to work on the cover of Ethan Hawke's first novel, as well as the O. J. Simpson autobiography. Unfortunately Little, Brown was acquired by Warner Books, and the entire art department was let go. While my colleagues got new jobs in publishing, I was interested in what everyone was calling new media. So I took a risk and got work designing for the web, CD-ROMs, and multimedia projects.
At 27, Boston's hardcore running mentality had started to influence me, and after five months of training, I successfully finished the San Diego Marathon. While staying in San Diego, I met Mark, a Canadian who was biking across the country. We stayed in touch by email, started long distance dating, and a year later, I moved to Montreal, where we later got married. The move to Montreal was an easy decision, I spoke the language and was looking forward to chance to work in a French speaking environment. At that time, I received a Net Diver award for doing great work as one of the few women in the web industry.
A few years later, Mark was offered incredible career opportunity in Manhattan, so once again, San Francisco would have to wait, but we also felt that New York was always just a fun short term adventure. While in NYC, I applied and into the Milton Glaser Summer Program. Not many people get it in so I felt honored. It was a week of conversations with and guidance from the great Milton Glaser himself – plus designer Louise Fili and photographer Duane Michals.
We finally moved to San Francisco this August, when Mark started working at Venables Bell & Partners. Since then, I have been freelancing for my previous employer, while updating my portfolio and looking for work.
Over the years, I've had a variety of roles and responsibilities in a variety of cities. I believe these experiences have made me an ideal candidate to work in a studio that is fast paced, and needs flexibility across all areas. I am someone who can go from doing production work, to mentoring others, and developing concepts. I have an understanding of how to work in both print and web and I can easily fit into teams because my objective is always helping others and making the best work possible.
I look forward to working for a Creative Director to whom I can dedicate myself and to working with people who inspire me to be better. I'm not the type to be in the limelight. Instead, each day I look forward to making the people I work with the stars.
